The former Cistercian convent of the Assumption of Mary at Kirchheim am Ries represents a special jewel in the historically significant landscape between Härtsfeld and Ries, which is interspersed with numerous historical and cultural testimonies. Away from the pulsating arterial roads, it has retained a quiet tranquility that is still guaranteed by the comprehensive monastery wall is increased.
In 1267, Count Ludwig III of Oettingen donated on the edge of the then twin village Kirchheim with the parishes of St. Martin in the lower and St. Jacob in the upper village a nunnery and gifted it richly. Through later acquisitions, the monastery gradually came to stately, but scattered property. The patronage rights of the two parish churches to St. Martin and St. James donated the Oettinger counts in 1274 the monastery. In 1307 the two parishes were merged and incorporated into the monastery.
