The nature reserve "Luppeaue" was designated in 1990, whereby two at that time already existing NSG were integrated. This is the former, protected since 1976 NSG Locked wood (16.91 ha) and the 1984 designated NSG "Papitzer Lachen" (39 ha). Since its expansion in 2000, the NSG "Luppeaue" has an area of approximately 598 ha.
The NSG hosts more than 500 plant species, of which 93 are listed in Saxony's Red List.
Large parts of the NSG are of habitat types such as: the Eutrophic still waters, running waters with underwater vegetation, moist Hochstaudenfluren, Brenndolden meadow meadows, lowland meadows, Sternmieren-oak-hornbeam forests, alder-ash and softwood forests and Hartholzauwälder.

The running water I. order is today 2.7 kilometers long. It begins at the northwest end of the Elster basin (district of Leipzig) and initially leads straight in a northwestern direction. It enters after a few meters in the district of Möckern, where on the southwestern (left) shore the Gemarkungsgrenze to Lindenau runs. After a few meters, the west leading Burgauenbach branches off. Then the Nahle crosses the Nahlewehr, which reduces the level from 104.3 m above sea level to 101.8 m above sea level
