Baystones is the official Wainwright summit of Wansfell, which is often mistaken for Wansfell Pike at the southwestern end of the fell. Baystones is the higher point and, while it doesn’t share the Pike’s views of Windermere, it does enjoy a glorious vista towards the Kirkstone Pass and the impressive Red Screes.
Most people approach
Baystones from Ambleside. It is a delightful route, up alongside Stockghyll
Force waterfall, before an ascent to Wansfell Pike and a lovely walk along an
undulating grassy ridge with splendid views of the surrounding fells and back towards
Windermere. Make sure you bring waterproof footwear, as the approach to the
final summit can be very boggy.
Alternatively, an approach to the fell from the Kirkstone Pass, which is only around 492 feet (150 m) lower than the summit, is a very straightforward walk, one of the easiest approaches to any Wainwright summit.

Baystones, also known as Wansfell, is a 1,601-foot (486 m) Wainwright fell in the Far Eastern Lake District National Park. It's not the highest of fells but it certainly takes up a lot of room between Ambleside and the Troutbeck valley. Wansfell Pike top (which is fairly commonly mistaken for the Wainwright summit) is also worth a visit whilst exploring this fell. A beautiful view down Windermere and across to the fells of the Kentmere Horseshoe are my favourite things about Baystones.

The Wainwright of Wansfell but is marked as Baystones on OS maps - not to miss when bagging. The ridge between Wansfell and Wansfell Pike can be boggy so waterproof boots are best.

I would suggest beginning the walk by visiting Stock Ghyll Waterfall. From here to the top of Wansfell is mainly a stone path. Amazing views from Wansfell pike. Abit boggy along the ridge to the summit.
