With the exception of a planned memorial site, the grove was completed during World War II. Parts of the facility were removed in the 1950s. A 225 meter long dry stone wall and the western flower terrace with a water basin have been preserved.
In the 1990s, the stairways and pergolas were repaired. The flower terrace is framed by a spacious pergola renewed in 1992.

Originally located here on the west bank of the Elster-Pleißen-Aue part of the Leipzig floodplain forest. In the year 1893 took place on the northern part of the later park for three weeks the International horticultural exhibition on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Leipzig Gardeners Association instead. Afterwards a competition for the reuse of the area was advertised, which won the Lindenauer gardeners O. Moosdorf. In 1896 a joint-stock company was founded to realize an amusement park project. She also acquired the southeast on the opposite Elster bank lying Ritterwerder (since 1917 Klingerhain) and leased the main site of the city. Also drawn to the park was the grounds of the Kuhturm in the northeast corner of the site; The Kuhturm was used as a front restaurant. On 29.04.1899 the Palmengarten was solemnly opened with a speech by Lord Mayor O. Georgi (1831-1918).
