        The past of Freiburg's Schlossberg is a very warlike one. Already expanded into a fortress in the 10th century, it was repeatedly destroyed and then rebuilt over the centuries. In the early days, the fortifications were destroyed twice by the Freiburgers themselves because the Freiburgers rebelled against the ruling counts.
        In the 16th century, the city of Freiburg's affiliation changed again and again in war and in peace. Freiburg once belonged to France, then again to Habsburg. France commissioned the fortress builder Vauban to build and expand the fortress on the Schlossberg.
        After France had to give up Freiburg again, the affiliation changed again. When the French had to give up Freiburg in the 17th century, all of the fortifications were razed to the ground.
        In 1805, the Greifeneggschlössle was built on the Schlossberg, which can still be visited today as a restaurant with a beer garden.
        In the 19th century, a bunker complex was built to protect against air raids. The only day this would be of any real use was the fateful night of November 27, 1944, the night of the Freiburg bombing. However, very few people went to the shelter on Schlossberg, which had a total capacity of around 6,000 people, because most citizens assumed it was one of the frequent false alarms.
