Pirna is located at the top of the Elbe valley widening, where the Wesenitz from the north and the Gottleuba from the south flow into the Elbe. It lies at the tectonic junction of the Ore Mountains and the West Sudeten, which widens to the west to the rift valley of the Elbe valley.
