The permeability of the viaducts enabled the city's expansion toward Bern from 1894 onwards: Zurich West was born! From 1990 onwards, the lower viaduct developed into a popular pedestrian route between the Letten-Areal and Josefswiese. In a few years, a continuation of the viaduct will be built over the railway tracks, creating a pedestrian connection between districts 4 and 5.
