Wilhelmshöhe CastleIntegrated into the Gesamtkunstwerk Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe, above the city of Kassel, Wilhelmshöhe Palace was built in 1786. Today it houses the Old Masters Picture Gallery, the Antique Collection, the Graphic Collection as well as the Castle Museum in the Weißenstein wing and a scientific reference library in the church wing.According to plans by Simon Louis Du Ry (1726–1799), the two side wings, the southern Weißenstein wing and the northern church wing, and finally the Corps de Logis, the central wing of the castle, were built. The Corps de Logis was monumentally increased by classical elements, a portico and a dome derived from the Roman pantheon. It was only in the 19th century under Elector Wilhelm II (ruled 1821–1831) that the castle got its closed shape by building connector structures between the wings. At the beginning of 1945 the Corps de Logis was destroyed by a bomb and could not be rebuilt until 1968–1974 and transformed into an art museum. The dome was not rebuilt.
