The main tower dates from the 14th century and was extended in 1510 to the Vorwerk and two smaller towers with curved domed dome. The top floor was added in 1662. The tower complex is decorated by three coats of arms: On the right tower, the first imperial city coat of arms of 1241 can be seen, the left shows the still valid coat of arms of 1481, and in the middle of the coat of arms is visible. If the moat was filled up until sixty years ago, it is now crossed by a stone bridge, as it used to be. (Wikipedia)

The city gate, which was located in the north of Weissenburg's old town, was originally part of the city wall that was built around 1200. The gate tower was built in the 14th century, its upper floor in the 17th century. Around 1520 the Vorwerk and the battlements were completed. The tracery of the balustrade is chronologically at the beginning of the Renaissance.
At the Ellinger Tor can be read a piece of town history: on the right half is the first coat of arms (1241), left opposite the second coat of arms of Weissenburg from 1481. The coat of arms of 1241 refers both to the city (half white castle) as also to the king (half imperial eagle), which at the same time refers to the imperial immediacy. In this coat of arms it is striking that a double-headed eagle was placed between the two small white turrets.
The Ellinger Tor now houses the city's historic council library.
