The castle was built around 930 as a border fortress between Bohemia and the Margraviate of Meissen. The lords of Bühnau, who were enfeoffed with Liebstadt in 1408, had the castle expanded into a palace after 1450. The castle gained world-historical importance through the nightly visit of Napoleon I on September 9, 1813, where he mutilated a colored copper engraving of his renegade general Moreau by cutting out the French cockade and wrote in anger underneath: "This traitor didn't deserve it."

    Hiking

In the foothills of the Osterzgebirge, high above the valley of the Seidewitz, in the smallest Saxon town, Liebstadt, lies the Kuckuckstein Castle. Away from the usual tourist trails of Saxon Switzerland and yet in the immediate vicinity, it towers over the wooded slopes. Even the journey via Pirna, through the picturesque Seidewitztal, is an incomparable experience. Here, history still breathes in its most original form. Even Napoleon could not escape this flair and for the Masonic Lodge the castle is still a focal point of their work today.

The castle was first mentioned in a document in connection with the enfeoffment of Günther and Heinrich von Bünau by the Landgrave of Thuringia and Margrave of Meißen Frederick the Younger on September 4, 1410. There is evidence that the previous castle was built in 930 under Henry I, Duke of the Saxons and King of East Francia
