First mentioned in documents in 1030, it's one of Germany's oldest cultural monuments. A spiritual place steeped in the energy of the past. Numerous seating areas surround the chapel for optimal enjoyment of the magnificent view. The climb up here is definitely worth it!

The origins of the medieval building have not yet been conclusively determined. Schönberg was first documented in 1030 as a gift to the Fulda Monastery. The Romanesque exterior masonry of the chapel dates back to the 12th century at the latest, and in 1261, a church serving as a parish church for the surrounding villages is documented. However, as with the nearby Metzenberg, a cult or defensive structure from pre-Christian times is suspected for Schönberg, so a sacred building could have been built as early as the time of Boniface's Christianization. There is no evidence for this popular theory, but the chapel's 1,000th anniversary was celebrated in 2009.
