In 1601, the Ter Munter Zijl lock was put into operation and in 1725 (after the devastating Christmas flood of 1717) the Zijl was renewed again. The result of the renovation was, among other things, the famous soul arch with the beautiful sandstone parapet above it. Various weapons and names are inscribed in the sandstone, including those of the five connected side vestries.
