Friedrich Wilhelm from the House of Hohenzollern had been Elector of Brandenburg and Duke of Prussia since 1640. In terms of foreign policy, he laid the foundation for Brandenburg's rise to European power in the Peace of Westphalia in 1648 and secured sovereignty over Prussia in the Peace of Oliva in 1660
