"The ancient stone monument of Pfalzfeld is one of the most valuable prehistoric monuments in the Middle Rhine region. It gives a good insight into the artistic style that was cultivated at the courts of the petty princes at that time. According to its representation and shape, the column belongs to the cult area, although its interpretation in detail has not yet been achieved. The monument, made of red sandstone, was found in 1649 by the Hessian historian Winkelmann in the Pfalzfeld cemetery between thorns, thistles and bushes.

It was initially interpreted as a Roman monument. A 1.20 m high square obelisk, which has broken off at the top, still stands on a partially preserved column-shaped treasure. According to old information, it was said to have had a crown in the shape of a human head. The four main surfaces of the stone, which are separated from one another by a rope pattern, are decorated with reliefs in a completely consistent manner. The center of the depiction is a human head, surrounded by swollen, drop-shaped Forms, as well as spiral and palmette-like ornaments. These stylistic features are characteristic of early Celtic art (400 BC).

The original Celtic column is in the Rheinisches Landesmuseum in Bonn. A copy has been adorning the town center as a landmark since 1993, on the occasion of the 1100th anniversary of the municipality of Pfalzfeld. Another replica of the so-called "flame column" is located with an information board directly on the Schinderhannes cycle path next to the Gleis 3 adventure restaurant."
