The Pilgrim’s Way is a historic path across tidal sands to Holy Island. Saints, monks, bishops and pilgrims have been crossing via this path since the 7th century. Long poles mark the route across the Holy Island Sands, which truly is a magical way to reach the island.

Be aware, it is vital that you check the tide times before crossing. The water can rise fast. The Pilgrim’s Way should only be attempted on a receding tide and before the tide turns into a rising tide. The walk can be done in approximately 75 minutes. Consult Northumberland council’s tide times page (See link below) and aim to start and finish your walk across within the first half of the time range deemed ‘safe to cross’.

It is such a unique experience to walk this pilgrims way at low tide.

Car park at start of causeway is now permanently closed. About space for half dozen cars at roadside so get there early if planning to walk.
