Tips

  • Hartenstein with Hartenstein Castle (probably built in 1250) is located a little above the Pegnitz Valley (from Velden via Günthersthal).
The castle has had an eventful history. Sometimes a Palatinate, sometimes a Bohemian nursing office, sometimes owned by wealthy Nuremberg mining entrepreneurs, then again an aristocratic seat, the castle was annexed by the Bavarian duke in 1620. Several times the castle and town were besieged by Nuremberg troops, but they could never be captured. In 2003 the municipality of Hartenstein was able to acquire the castle and make it accessible to the public for the first time in its history. Today it houses an exhibition on knighthood in Franconia. (see hartenstein-mfr.de/index.php?id=219)
