Mountain Biking Highlight
The Wartburg is a castle in Thuringia, located above the town of Eisenach at the northwestern end of the Thuringian Forest, 411 m above sea level. NN. It was founded by Ludwig the Springer around 1067 and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999.
The name means Waiting, so watch, guard castle. The district of Eisenach called Wartha, however, has no relation to Wartburg.
The present-day Wartburg has been largely rebuilt in the 19th century, including less preserved parts. The current appearance of the Wartburg and its landscaped park goes back to the Grand Duke Carl Alexander of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach.
