Easy pass crossing (2313 m, T2) and little committed alternative route to the opening stage of the GTA on the Griespass. From the Val Bedretto a bit steeper, to Val Formazza flat flat alpine terrain.
Under Mussolini should in the 1920s, a "tourist road" built over the pass, decaying remains of it can be found on the Italian side. The Swiss never supported the project and instead built military positions in their mountains around the pass, which have also been preserved.

More importantly, the Italian / Swiss border crossing between the Helgenhorn (or «Punta d'Elgio») and the Marchhorn. Connects the Val Formazza with the Val Bedretto. A road built in 1929/1930 during the construction of the Toggia dam reaches the pass crossing on the Italian side.
The merchants of Uri and Val Formazza crossed the pass as early as the 12th century. On the first “Carta Sarda” called “Auf der Mark” (border pass) (from which the proper name “Marchhorn” comes from). The final name refers to the chapel on the Ticino side.
