Founded at the time of Maria Theresia and originally housed in the Ballhaus, the institution provided the completion, care, evidence and distribution of the furniture for the imperial palaces.
In 1901, for the purpose of centralization, the present "Hofmobilien- und Materialdepot" was made possible by the construction of its own building (7) (building 1899-1901) .After the end of the First World War, the Republic of Austria took over the institution under the name "Bundesmobiliendepot" today federal collection of old style furniture).
A rich collection of exhibits (opening on June 28, 1924) was created from the collections, which gives an insight into the living culture of the imperial family from the early Baroque to the end of the Francisco-Josephine era and shows the high quality of the artisan work. The collection is comparable only to the "Guard Meuble Nationale" in Paris and consists of two parts: Early Baroque to Empire (including "Schlosshofer Zimmer" by Prince Eugen, desk of Joseph II, Empire bedroom Franz 'I.) and Biedermeier ( 15 fully furnished rooms with furniture, wallpaper, carpets, lighting fixtures and pictures from formerly imperial castle possession, richest collection of Austria, among other things music salon, dining room, breakfast room, bedroom), also the throne arrangement Franz Joseph I. from the secret council chamber of the Hofburg.
