In the Belse heide there are several heathland ponds, also called torfvennnen, these fens are a very important biotope for the many water birds that can nest here undisturbed and find food! In the center of the area are the Duivelskuil and the Torfven, two wet depressions with an exceptionally great natural value. The gale, the lavender of the Kempen, is still growing around the Duivelskuil. The Belse Heide and the Bels Broek are the habitat of all native woodpecker species and rare day and night birds of prey including the hawk, the tawny owl and the long-eared owl. The woodcock breeds hidden on the forest floor.
