The Greinapass has been the border between Graubünden and Ticino since 1858. The terrain there is geologically interesting: on the north side, the mountains are made up of crystalline rocks from the Gotthard massif (Piz Medel group), in the area of the pass, light dolomites and rough hawks from the Triassic period come to the surface and on the south side are the soft black slates the Coroi series from the Jura (Piz Coroi). So you walk through a picture book of geological history.
