The Greina is described as an "extensive, natural plateau untouched by civilization", a "rump valley that can only be reached from all sides via steep rocky steps or mountain ranges", 6 km long, 1 km wide (Broggi, Reith 1984) . It is considered a landscape type that is unique in Switzerland. Despite this peculiarity, it only narrowly escaped a major hydropower project, in which it would have disappeared completely into a reservoir - which fortunately could be prevented through the committed efforts of many people and institutions. Today it is protected and a wonderful hiking retreat.

The writer Leo Tuor from Val Sumvitg looked after the sheep here when he was young, many of his stories are about the special magic of the Greina (though he doesn't like hikers...):

"Hate, scorn and laughter were his weapons against stupidity. But in the end he had to retreat to the mountains like a wounded animal and then disappear, disappear like last year's snow. Don't ask where. [...] Giacumbert was his name , and the names of his pastures had the same initial. (Leo Tuor: Giacumbert Nau, 1988)
