The mill was built in 1742 and originally stood in Schaffen, on the Doodsberg. In 1887 he moved to the Mierenberg in Assent. The mill was in operation until 1953. Six years later, the city bought it and it was rebuilt on the city walls. Today the mill belongs to the heritage of the Provincial Domain Halve Maan, which manages the monument in collaboration with 'Living Mills' and keeps it in good working order.

The Lindenmolen is a unique example because of its windmill case, one of the largest in Flanders. It is a stake or standard mill, so named after the large trunk (stake or standard) from which the entire mill case hangs. The trunk also serves as a pivot to turn the mill to the wind (turning). This is done with a kind of pulley on which a chain can be wound. Around the mill are twelve stones to which the chain can be attached, the creepers

Initially, since 1742, the mill stood on the Doodsberg in Schaffen (Diest). Petrus Alen bought the mill in 1886 and had it re-erected on the Mierenberg in Assent. The Alen family was the miller there for four generations (1887 -1987). In 1953, the mill was shut down and continued to grind on electricity.

At the initiative of the then city archivist of Diest, Van der Linden, the Alen family donated the mill to the city of Diest in 1958. From then on, the mill was also named after the archivist. The standard mill was dismantled in 1958 and re-erected in its original form on the city walls of Diest, at the entrance to the provincial domain Halve Maan, in 1960. The mill was not put into operation, however. Some unusable or missing parts were replaced during the reconstruction with parts from the wooden mill of Kortenaken that had been demolished in 1960. The sails and the stairs came from the standard mill of Eindhout (Laakdal) that had also been demolished in 1960. The mill came into the possession of the province of Flemish Brabant. In 2003-2004, Adriaens Molenbouw bv from Weert (NL) carried out important restoration work. For example, the sail shaft, the cross plates and the braces were replaced. The mill was inaugurated on 29 May 2005. The mill has also been operational since 2011. During an inspection by Monumentenwacht Vlaams-Brabant in 2017, it was found that the large beetle had attacked a number of vital beams and an important connection. The mill was shut down. After some preliminary work, a thorough restoration started on 17 September 2018. In 2019, the mill was reopened to the public.

The Lindenmolen is a wooden standard mill with an open base on iron sandstone cubes (Diestiaan), located on a grassy belt and accessible via a belt staircase. The wide mill casing has a projecting, slightly undulating saddleback roof (oak shingles). The windward side of the mill casing has a covering with oak shingles and a beard at the bottom, the side walls and tail side have vertical planking, with peepholes on the side walls. The tail side contains the entrance with balcony, a corn hatch and a hatch at the height of the loft.
