The largest port crane of the Middle Ages is still at the Mottlau today. It used to be used for loading and unloading ships. It was also an extraordinary city gate. Today it houses the National Maritime Museum.

Gdańsk's most famous postcard view shows the Motlawa, the Gdańsk harbor quay and the crane gate (Stary Zuraw). The medieval wooden harbor crane, built in 1443, served as a hoist and at the same time as a defensive gate. With a load capacity of two tons, it was once the largest elevator in the world. The technical monument houses the interesting Central Sea Museum (Centralne Muzeum Marynarki). Today the crane gate is regarded as a symbol of Gdańsk.
