The municipality of Sennestadt in the southeast of the independent city of Bielefeld in North Rhine-Westphalia has about 21,000 inhabitants and is remarkable for its urban development. The large housing estate Sennestadt was built from 1956 to around 1965 in the heath and meadow landscape of the former municipality Senne II as a planned city according to the plans of the city planner Hans Bernhard Reichow, primarily for expellees and refugees. Conceived as a car-friendly city at that time, the concept of an "organic urban architecture", which has since been criticized, gained topicality again.Sennestadt is located on the northern edge of the Senne. The district is bounded on the north by the main ridge of the Teutoburg Forest and on the west by the motorway 2. A natural border to the district of Lippe in the east is the Menkhauser Bach. Here already ran in the Middle Ages, the border between the county Ravensberg and the Principality of Lippe. Other streams such as the Dalke, the Strothbach, the Sprungbach and the Hasselbach drain the area following the natural gradient in a southwesterly direction to the Ems. The landscape is partly shaped by sand dunes. Since the 19th century, the wooded forest areas of Sennestadt have increasingly been designated as protected areas for drinking water.Source: Wikipedia

The Sennestadt was built in the 1950s and 1960s as a city for refugees and displaced persons. It has many architectural peculiarities that only stand out at second glance: for example, the skyscrapers are so fanned out that the balconies are all spatially separated, so do not disturb the neighbors, and that all apartments have sun in the afternoon or evening. The multi-family houses are never parallel, but always slightly oblique to each other, which gives the settlement a relaxed character. The Bullerbach has cut deeply into the landscape, so that a natural Bachtal shares the city in length. Together with the Grünzug in the north, the valley forms a "green T". Curios are also many junctions: The side streets of the Elbeallee do not meet at right angles to the main road, but in curved angles.
