The Grillo Theater in downtown Essen was opened in 1892 as a city theater, making it one of the oldest theaters in the Ruhr area. The city theater was donated by the Essen industrialist Friedrich Grillo.
The building is designed in the neo-baroque style. With the Theaterplatz, the Grillo Theater forms a beautiful, peaceful oasis in the middle of the city.
