    Hiking

To commemorate the Battle of the Nations near Leipzig in 1813, so-called Apel stones were erected at important sites of the fighting. They are named after their initiator, the Leipzig citizen and writer Theodor Apel (1811 to 1867). There are a total of fifty such monuments in Leipzig and the surrounding area. This stone with the number 42 marks the place of the storming of Leipzig, which was occupied by the French at the time, by General Buelow (later Count von Dennewitz) with the 29,000-strong Third Prussian Corps.
