This tower is the only control tower of the Lüneburg Landwehr that is still preserved. Now it's a hotel.

    purpose of the Landwehr
The salt town of Lüneburg had had the staple rights since 1392. This meant that in a wide radius around Lüneburg, every traveling merchant first had to bring his goods to Lüneburg in order to "stack" them there, i. H. had to offer for sale before he was allowed to move them on. Of course, the merchants wanted to avoid this, and they left the main streets with their carts and tried to drive around the city on side roads. In order to prevent merchants from bypassing Lüneburg, land defenses were built to the west and east of the city. The Lüneburg Landwehr thus played an important role in directing trade.

The Hasenburg is a fortified tower that was built around 1400 and was used as a defense system for the Lüneburg Landwehr. Today home to a hotel and restaurant.

The former control tower is now a hotel, formerly used to monitor trade routes.
