It was the Hundsmühlen watermill, a gift from Count Johann XVI to his beloved wife Elisabeth, which was dismantled there in 1754 and rebuilt at this point on the Lethe.

The coat of arms that we find at the mill next to the entrance is that of the families von Schwarzburg and Hohenstein and the Counts of Oldenburg and Delmenhorst. It is therefore the coat of arms of the mother of Count Anton Günter, who died in 1612 and was so important for the history of Oldenburg, who saved Oldenburg from certain destruction during the 30-year war through skilful negotiations and generous gifts in the form of gold and horses. In the end, Oldenburg is now one of the few cities, along with Görlitz, that has never been damaged or destroyed by warlike rage over the centuries.

Today, of course, hardly anyone is interested in that, as our main concern is to be entertained with culinary delights. And as far as that is concerned, you are absolutely right here:

Above all, this watermill steeped in history is a popular excursion destination for us today with a recommendable gastronomic establishment, where tables can be reserved in advance for all kinds of occasions:

The coffee is fresh, the cake delicious, the slices generous and everything else is said to be a treat too.

The old ⇔water mill⇔ in Wardenburg - Fünfhausen has been a meeting place for people in the Oldenburg area for decades and invites you to relax and unwind. Surrounded by the Lethe, the "Watermill Wardenburg" lies as if built on an island. There are two nature conservation monuments in the garden: a black locust and an alder.

        The watermill in Wardenburg

All that is known about the origin of the watermill in Wardenburg is that it belonged to the Hundsmühlen estate. In 1310, there is talk of "Hunoldsmolen", which means "Hunold's mill". The name Hundsmühlen was derived from this. At the end of the 15th century, the mill came into the possession of the Count of Oldenburg.

In 1576, Count Johann VII bequeathed the mill to his wife as a wedding gift. In 1739, a group of five interested parties took over the mill - apparently contrary to the expectations of the bailiff Hinüber, who had already seen himself as the owner. The disappointed bailiff left no stone unturned to make things as difficult as possible for the new tenants: he dammed the Lethe and even diverted it, so that the mill was temporarily dry and a long legal dispute ensued. In 1820, the mill had three water wheels and was used as a grain mill as well as a fulling and oil mill.
