From Wikipedia: From 1299 to 1426, the place had Luebian city rights and thus also a mayor and councilor. In addition, the state elder of Holstein-Rendsburg lived in the village, so that the city assembly for all of Holstein took place in Bornhöved until the beginning of the state parliaments in Kiel in 1480.

Bornhöved was first mentioned in 798, making it one of the oldest settlements in Schleswig-Holstein. Altogether there were three armed conflicts here, with the Battle of Bornhöved on July 22nd, 1227 having significant European effects.
A "history path", consisting of 31 traditional stations, is signposted. In the local history museum "De ole Rökerkaat" there is detailed information about community events in changing exhibitions.
On December 7th, 2013 the "Swedish Peace" had lasted for 200 years. Since the last active armed conflict between the Swedes took place near Bornhöved, this day was the occasion for a joint German-Swedish celebration Completion of the church, which was extensively restored in 2001/2002.
A wide range of crafts and trades settled in Bornhöved itself. The place quickly grew to a considerable size and had Lüb’sche city rights from 1299 to 1426. For centuries, this is where the assembly of the estates for the whole of Holstein was held. To commemorate this, a memorial stone was inaugurated on the "Viert" in 2005. It was not until 1480 that the state parliaments were invited to Kiel.
