    From 1617 to 1781 the castle was the residence of the noble family of WĂŒrttemberg-Neuenstadt. From 1781 the castle was uninhabited. However, it was used as a fruit store and from 1806 to 1815 it served as barracks for a garrison stationed in Neuenstadt. Furthermore, the DĂŒrnitz building was the seat of the Cameral Office from 1829. In the 19th century the corner tower served as the seat of the forestry office and as the forester's residence. Since 1958 the Neuenstadt open-air theater has taken place every summer in the castle moat.

      This is where the WĂŒrttemberg-Neuenstadt branch resided from 1618 to 1781. The oldest part of the castle was built in 1559–1565 on the foundation walls of a castle mentioned in 1392 by the Lords of Weinsberg. The oldest component is the three-storey stone north wing, the so-called DĂŒrnizbau, which has a Renaissance portal on its east side. The east wing, known as the Prinzessenbau, was also built as a three-storey stone house in the second half of the 17th century. The royal stables are also part of the castle, which once surrounded a square courtyard with all its wings. The castle was the residence of the WĂŒrttemberg-Neustadt line until 1781 and later served as a fruit store and barracks. In April 1945 the upper floor of the east wing was destroyed by air fire. A wooden gallery was later installed in its place.
