It is unclear when permanent settlement began. However, the name ending in -rose indicates an originally Sorbian settlement. It was first mentioned in a document in 1382 (“to the aldin Gostraze”) comparatively late; the church in Atterwasch was already mentioned in 1294. The names Kleine Gostrasze (first mention of Klein Gastrose) and Grosse Gostrose have come down to us from the years 1480 and 1486 respectively.
