Canterbury Cathedral is the most famous Christian structure in England. Founded in 597, the cathedral was rebuilt between 1070 and 1077 and then largely rebuilt again in the Gothic style following a fire in 1174. The cathedral is both a holy place and part of a World Heritage Site and is the most popular tourist attraction in the city. For opening times and more information, visit: canterbury-cathedral.org.

Founded in 597 AD, Canterbury Cathedral is one of the oldest and most famous churches in England. The magnificent pale stone and golden spires were built in the Romanesque and Gothic styles in 1070. The Archbishop of Canterbury, head of the Church of England, leads the cathedral.

Don't miss visiting the shrine to the saint Thomas Becket, an archbishop who was murdered here in 1077.

You can visit the cathedral daily from 9am - 5.30pm (4.30 pm on Sundays). More information: canterbury-cathedral.org
After the founding of the Anglican Church by Henry VIII, the Archbishop of Canterbury as Primate of all England is the spiritual leader. He also crowns the English kings. Since construction, the cathedral has also been a major pilgrimage site.
