Bike Touring Highlight (Segment)
In the second half of the 18th century, the middle Ruhr was expanded into a shipping route. Until the beginning of the railway age, the river was the main route of transport for coal and other goods. The towpath is the former towpath along the river. Before steam power entered the service of shipping, the barges were pulled against the current on ropes by several draft horses that were led over this towpath. (Source: bikeline, Ruhrtal-Radweg)
