Classified as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1998, the boat lifts on the Canal du Center have not been modified since their commissioning. In addition, the site of the Houdeng-Aimeries canal bridge is truly exceptional and not to be missed.

The Strépy-Thieu boat lift lies on a branch of the Canal du Centre in the municipality of Le Rœulx, Hainaut, Belgium. With a height difference of 73.15 metres (240.0 ft) between the upstream and downstream reaches, it was the tallest boat lift in the world upon its completion, and remained so until the Three Gorges Dam ship lift in China was completed in January 2016.

This row of boat lifts on the Canal du Center is an extraordinarily impressive example of engineering from previous generations. Even then, people used relatively simple means to find solutions to problems that seemed insoluble at first glance, namely to overcome a considerable difference in height with a ship, which was not feasible with the previous methods of simple lock construction. This construction has therefore rightly received recognition as an industrial World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
