There is also open-cast limestone mining here in Münsterland, only that the limestone quarries and lime works here are a lot smaller and not in such large numbers.
To see such limestone quarries as here in Elbingerode is impressive and frightening at the same time. This only harms nature, which we humans unfortunately don't care about, since it's about important raw material extraction that we need for life.
