It was created on the basis of the construction of the Naumburg Cathedral in the 13th century. It was built in the style of late Romanesque, and partially rebuilt in the 15th century, and preserved its present appearance.

The construction of this late Romanesque church, also known as the "sister of Naumburg Cathedral," dates back to the period between 1210 and 1230. It was probably commissioned by the Thuringian Landgrave Ludwig IV (reigned from 1217 to 1227). The church's core is Romanesque. At the beginning of the 15th century, the apse was demolished and replaced by a Gothic choir. The southern side apse was sacrificed to an added sacristy. At the end of the 15th century, the nave was demolished and replaced by a hall nave.
