When the Augustinian monks came to the up-and-coming town of Grimma in the 13th century, they rebuilt the hall church of their Gotha mother monastery: simple, towerless, but with a characteristic ridge turret and high stepped gable (1430). It was the first church of a mendicant order on what is now Saxon land. The Cistercians left the city with the preaching monks and moved to the gates of Nimbschen. Only a few years earlier, the nuns founded a hospital on Baderplan, which has been preserved to this day and was dedicated to St. Elizabeth of Thuringia.

In the 14th century, a flood swept away parts of the church. A hundred years later, a fire destroyed the building. The construction of the current sacred building began immediately. The monastery church was reconsecrated in 1435.

With a wall thickness of almost one and a half meters, the impressive building is more than 54 meters long. The church is an average of 12 meters wide and 19 meters high.

It is a building built around 1435. After Lehrstand and through the roof collapse, after the turn again rehabilitated. Today an artistic place to commemorate the flood of 2002, as well as for concerts and exhibitions.
