The Frederikshavn Kirke is the largest church in Frederikshavn with 1,100 seats. The building, completed in 1892, was designed by Vilhelm Ahlmann (1852–1928) in the national romantic style. The central building rises on the plan of a Greek cross. Ahlmann used parts of an octagon as a recurring geometric element. The central church tower with a copper dome is modeled on the neo-Gothic bell tower of Aachen Cathedral.

At the end of the 19th century, the city of Frederikshavn grew so much that Fladstrand Kirke was no longer sufficient. In 1882, planning began for another church, but it was not until 1890 that King Christian IX could. lay the foundation. The church was consecrated on October 23, 1892.

The building was renovated in 2019. In addition to work on the building fabric, energetic improvements were carried out in the context of underfloor heating and LED lighting technology. Optical changes have also been made. The interior received new tiles, oak parquet and a redesign of the chancel.

Today the parish has around 5,000 members. The church on the Hirsholm Islands also belongs to the community. In the 1960s the municipality was divided into Frederikshavn Sogn, Bangsbostrand Sogn with Bangsbostrand Kirke and Abildgård Sogn with Abildgård Kirke and Fladstrand Kirke. The parish belongs to the Frederikshavn Provsti in the diocese of Aalborg.

Frederikshavn Kirke is a choir church built in a purely Romanesque style, the so-called Faksekalk. With the equally long cross arms, the church is completely symmetrical. The tower is 56.5 meters high. There are four smaller side springs on the tower.
