The peat shed
Rest where the peat was once stored
The peat shed in Neuenburgerfeld is a relic from the time when the clinker industry flourished in the southern district of Friesland.
The brick masters needed a lot of peat to burn the bricks. The sods that the peat cutters had dug in the Baasenmeer and in the Stapeler Moor were taken to the drying area and set up in rings there. Once the peat had dried, it was placed in heaps, so-called bullets, and transported away via the dams that ran through the moor.
From 1907, the peat shed was used to store valuable fuel. The Neuenburgerfeld village community has looked after the building since 1983. An adjacent soccer field and an extension with sanitary facilities make the peat shed the ideal resting place.
