Best Hikes to Neuenburg Primeval Forest

Tips

  • The ancient, mighty oaks with a trunk circumference of up to six meters are characteristic of the "Neuchâtel primeval forest". Mighty hornbeams and copper beeches are also often found here, which fill the areas between the old tree veterans and in some cases even tower above them. Many old oaks are now hollow, rotted and partially fallen over. Dead wood is not removed in this protected area and thus offers a habitat for many creatures.

It is also remarkable that holly grow here in the forest, which grow like trees up to ten meters high and form veritable thickets. The old stock of trees offers many cave breeders good breeding grounds.

  • The nature reserve with the sign NSG WE 307 is approximately 713 hectares in size. It completely encompasses the 664.39-hectare FFH area of the same name. Individual sub-areas that are not part of the FFH area, but are completely surrounded by it, were largely included in the nature reserve. Within the scope of the nature conservation ordinance, the nature reserve replaces the previous landscape protection area "Neuenburger Holz" designated in 1985 and the previous nature reserve "Neuenburger Urwald" designated in 1938. Part of the forest is designated as a natural forest reserve . The nature reserve borders on the remaining parts of the "Neuenburger Holz" landscape protection area in several places. The area has been under nature protection since February 1, 2019. The competent lower nature conservation authority is the district of Friesland.

  • A really beautiful jungle that is littered with wood anemones in spring. You can hike wonderfully on many very different paths (wide to beaten path and unspoilt).
