Hiking

Today only barely visible and overgrown earth walls are the name of the place Schanze, which is located directly on the heights of the Rothaargebirge. In the late Middle Ages, village life was characterized by insecure living conditions. Looting, cattle robbing and wars were the order of the day. To protect its inhabitants, the town erected roadblocks (old: Schanzen), which were often overgrown with thick hedges or stocked with palisades. In this way, incoming traffic could be controlled.
