The Catholic parish church of St. Peter and Paul is a highly visible landmark of the city Hochheim am Main, it is considered the only Hessian late Baroque fresco church.
It was built in the years 1730 to 1732 on the foundations of the previous church by the Mainz engineer Captain Johann Farolsky.
In 1775 Johann Baptist Enderle, who lived in Söflingen (today a district of Ulm) and lived from 1725 to 1798, created the late Baroque frescoes in the nave and the high choir as well as on the two galleries.
Cracks in the vault, soiling by dust and candle soot and often inexpertly carried out repairs and overpainting seriously damaged the frescoes. These restoration attempts took place in the years 1852, 1896, 1930 to 1932 and 1970 to 1972.
Static security measures were additionally necessary. When cracks appeared in the walls in 1989, it was evident that the church was in danger of collapse. The security of the building including a complete exterior renovation with today's red and white colors took place in the years 1993 to 1995.
Experts said the precious frescoes were lost forever. Reason for this verdict was that in the 1950s, the roof beams had been impregnated with wood preservatives, with the chemicals used had penetrated through the ceiling in the fresco, which had darkened representations and destroyed the substance.
Contrary to the prognosis, it was still possible to save the frescoes. The restoration work lasted from 1999 to 2005. The frescoes can now be seen again in their original colors and liveliness. The restoration work is documented in a workbook for the preservation of monuments in Hesse.
At noon on January 30, 2016, a confessional was probably completely destroyed by arson and the building was heavily smoked. Source: Wikipedia

Unique location on the edge of the old town with a wonderful view over the Hochheim vineyards and the Rhine-Main plain.Don't let the forged fences behind the church deter you from entering the "Belvedere": the left door was open when we visited! After that, beautiful hikes can still be started from there ...
