The city has been surrounded by walls since the mid-13th century. The city fortifications are 2,435 meters long. They were built almost entirely of bricks in the monastery format, which is unique in Germany. They were originally 9–11 meters high. Today, they are between 4 and 8 meters high.
The southeastern section of the city wall is named after the Glinze River, which runs parallel to it.
