The Sorbenturm is part of the old Ilburg. This was first mentioned in a document in 961, which is now the year Eilenburg was founded. The Sorb Tower is the only solid building in the Ilburg that has survived. It was probably built in the 12th century at the highest point of the approximately 220 by 150 meter plateau and served as a lookout and retreat. After two more truces were created, probably in the 13th century, the Sorbian Tower lost its strategic importance and fell into disrepair. In the middle of the 19th century it should therefore be demolished. But committed citizens saved and preserved this striking building in Eilenburg. The tower, which is 16 meters high today, has served as a lookout tower since 1863. It was reconstructed in 1997/98.Source: eilenburg.de/tourismus/sorbenturm

Wonderful view, highly recommended. Above is a telescope, which improves the view even more.

It is the last remaining massive structure of the former Ilburg, which was first mentioned in documents in 961. The tower was probably built at the highest point of the plateau.
