    Hiking

Bridges connect people with landscapes. This bridge also makes it possible to reach the other side with dry feet.

    Hiking

Combination of 2 walks from Redu. The start begins with the blue walk. This sometimes goes quite steeply downhill to the Lesse, which has a steep drop there. Below we then go onto the yellow walk over a small "ruisseau" via a (rickety) bridge. The walk runs from there (loop-shaped) completely through the forest, back to the bridge. From there back over the bridge and onto the second part of the blue walk. That part runs on asphalt through the village of Lesse and uphill again just past the ESA space centre, from where the end point Redu appears again.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What is the typical length and elevation gain for hikes involving the Wooden Bridge Over the Lesse?

While specific trail lengths vary, a popular circular route starting from Redu, incorporating the bridge, can be around 10-15 km. This route involves significant elevation changes, including a steep descent to the Lesse River and an uphill section past the ESA space centre, making it suitable for hikers seeking an intermediate challenge.

Are there any specific landmarks or points of interest near the Wooden Bridge Over the Lesse?

Yes, the area around the bridge is rich with natural beauty and a few notable points. The bridge itself is a key landmark. Hikers on the popular Redu loop will also pass by the ESA space centre, offering an unexpected sight amidst the natural landscape. The charming village of Redu, known as the 'Book Village', is also a significant nearby attraction.

What are the parking options for visitors to the Wooden Bridge Over the Lesse?

Parking can be limited, especially in smaller villages like Redu, which serves as a common starting point for trails to the bridge. It's advisable to arrive early, particularly during peak seasons or weekends, to secure a spot. There are no specific permits required for parking in general public areas.

Is the Wooden Bridge Over the Lesse accessible by public transport?

Public transport options to this relatively remote area are generally limited. While some bus services might connect to larger towns in the Ardennes, reaching the immediate vicinity of the bridge or villages like Redu often requires a car. Checking local bus schedules for the province of Namur is recommended for the most up-to-date information.

How suitable is the Wooden Bridge Over the Lesse for a winter hike?

While the intro suggests warmer months for optimal conditions, a winter hike can be picturesque. However, trails can become slippery and muddy, especially on steep descents to the river. River levels may also be higher. Hikers should be prepared with appropriate winter gear, including sturdy, waterproof footwear with good grip, and check local weather and trail conditions before setting out.

What considerations should I keep in mind if bringing children or dogs to the Wooden Bridge Over the Lesse?

The area is generally considered family-friendly and dog-friendly. For children, be aware that some sections of the trails, particularly the descent to the Lesse, can be quite steep. Dogs should be kept on a leash, especially in areas with wildlife or other hikers. Ensure you carry enough water for both yourself and your pets, and be prepared to pack out any waste.

Are there any cafes, pubs, or accommodation options near the Wooden Bridge Over the Lesse?

The nearby village of Redu offers a few amenities, including cafes and potentially small eateries, especially given its status as a 'Book Village'. For more extensive options, you might need to venture to slightly larger towns in the Ardennes. Accommodation typically includes guesthouses or holiday rentals in Redu and surrounding villages.

Are there opportunities for wild swimming in the Lesse River near the bridge?

While the Lesse River is beautiful, specific designated wild swimming spots directly at the bridge are not widely advertised. The river can have strong currents and varying depths, especially after rainfall. If considering swimming, always prioritize safety, be aware of local regulations, and check water conditions. It's generally recommended to enjoy the river from its banks.

What are some alternative hiking trails or viewpoints if the main route to the Wooden Bridge Over the Lesse is crowded?

The Lesse valley offers numerous trails beyond the most popular Redu loop. You can explore other marked paths that branch off from villages further along the Lesse or Semois rivers. While the Wooden Bridge Over the Lesse is a highlight, the entire region is crisscrossed with scenic routes, many offering stunning viewpoints over the Ardennes landscape and river valleys. Consulting local trail maps or hiking apps can reveal less-trafficked alternatives.

Is the Wooden Bridge Over the Lesse the famous Pont de Claies over the Semois River?

No, the Wooden Bridge Over the Lesse is distinct from the famous Pont de Claies. While both are notable wooden bridges in the Belgian Ardennes, the Pont de Claies is a unique, annually constructed hurdle bridge located over the Semois River near Laforêt. The Wooden Bridge Over the Lesse is situated over the Lesse River, near Redu, and is a permanent structure, though rustic in nature.
