Gmünd was founded in the 11th or 12th century AD as an outpost of the Archdiocese of Salzburg to protect the Katschberg saddle and was first mentioned in a document in 1252.
Gmünd was granted town rights in 1346 and is, after Friesach, the second oldest documented medieval town in Carinthia.
