Originally, in the Middle Ages, there was a watermill in the center of the village of Banzkow. For many years, it served as a granary. From the 15th century onward, it also supplied the ducal kitchen in Schwerin. Later, the mill was owned by the local lord before being leased to the millers after the Thirty Years' War. Around 1760, a post mill was built in addition to the watermill. At the same time, many new windmills were built or enlarged in Mecklenburg. The first Dutch windmills also appeared.

In 1872, the watermill was demolished because the miller always had to stop milling when a sluice was opened. In 1874, the gallery-style Dutch windmill was built near the existing post mill. Until 1919, the two mills stood close together, when the post mill was demolished. In 1957, the Dutch windmill, which had been milling until then, ceased operations. Between 1974 and 1976, the "Clara Zetkin" LPG converted it into a restaurant. Two dummy wings were added to restore its former appearance. In 1994, it finally passed to a new owner and was converted into a modern hotel with its own saltwater pool in 1995.

Because the mill is a listed building, some compromises had to be made during its complete renovation. Today, the Banzkow Mill is the last remaining windmill in the Lewitz region.

Beautiful, thatched windmill, the last of its kind in Lewitz, built in 1874, converted into a 3* superior hotel.
