The old town of Schwerin around the cathedral is the old core of the city. But also the shopping and promenade. Which is more shaped by the houses of the 19th century.
The wooden city fortifications were only replaced by a wall in the 14th century, which did not encompass the shelves north of Schwerin, which developed parallel to the old town. A new entrance was later created through the Schmiedetor and Schmiedestrasse. The city fortifications were further expanded up to the end of the 18th century using water resources and gradually torn down again with the expansion of residential buildings. Remains of the city wall have been preserved in Burgstrasse to this day.
During the fires in 1531, 1558 and 1561, large parts of the old town structure were destroyed. With the exception of the Schwerin Cathedral, the cathedral courtyard and some parts of the castle, there are no buildings left that were built before the 17th century. The old town is characterized by 19th century historicism. With the relocation of the ducal residence from Ludwigslust to Schwerin in 1837, construction activity was revived in addition to the economy. Representative buildings and the redesigned Schwerin Palace were built under the influence of Georg Adolph Demmler, who was appointed court architect in 1841.
Since 1968, new prefabricated apartment buildings have been built on the Großer Moor in the old town, after old, neglected building fabric was torn down there and filled up at the Burgsee. The monotonous appearance of the prefabricated buildings was only loosened by maintaining historical street layouts, partially clinker brick facades and the bevelling of the roofs. It wasn't until the 1980s that a few half-timbered buildings were renovated.

The market in Schwerin is a rectangular historic market place in Schwerin's old town, whose history dates back to the founding of the city in 1160. To distinguish it from the shelf market of 1832 independent Neustadt (Schelfe) he is also referred to as Altstädtischer market. It is located south of the cathedral. Four of the buildings framing the square are listed buildings. The old town market got its base after the big city fire of the year 1651. This area was expanded 1783-85 a few meters to the north and measures today 60 × 52 meters. The market is bordered to the north by the New Building (pillared building), to the east by the Town Hall, the Town Hall with a historical façade reconstructed in 1975, three gabled houses newly built in 1975, to the south residential buildings with late neoclassical façades dating back to 1840 and to the west other town houses, of which a half-timbered house was partially preserved. In front of the New Building is the Lion Monument. For the most part the pedestrian zone is Schmiedestraße, Schusterstraße and Puschkinstraße (formerly Königsstraße) as well as two passages from the butcher's market. North of the market square is the Schwerin Cathedral.Source:

The building consists of two half-timbered gables of the 17th century and further with four gable roofs to the east and a west-continuous saddle roof covered parts of the building, whose origins range from the 14th to the 20th century. The only relic of the medieval predecessor building is the medieval archway that spans the passage to the butcher's market adjoining on the back (east side) of the house. The pre-glazed two-storey Tudor-style façade on the front (west side) of 1835 is crenellated and has two corner risalites. The gilt equestrian figure on the central spire from the 18th century shows the coat of arms of Schwerin, the city founder Heinrich the Lion. The town hall was restored in 1983/85, two modern gabled houses were built as functional buildings on the back. A renovation, especially in the interior of the building, took place in 2000/2001.The city administration and the Lord Mayor now use the 1998 newly built townhouse in the street Am Packhof near the main station as the headquarters. In the old town hall of Schwerin today the city marketing company Schwerin GmbH has its seat with the tourist information office operated by it. In the Demmelsaal (former model hall) of the building, among other things, city representative meetings take place.Source:
