Schwante near Oranienburg is the noble seat of the von Redern family. The area around is extremely rich in frogs, because there are many in the near extensive forests of the swamps.

At one time a Herr von Redern was seriously ill, and since the frogs made an uncanny noise with their screeching, especially at night, the patient could not sleep at night, and his condition grew worse and worse. One day a poor man came into the house and begged. The noblewoman gave him an offering with her own hand and wept. Then the poor man asked why she was crying, and she told him that her husband was so ill and that he couldn't get better because the crying frogs didn't let him enjoy a minute of sleep. Then the beggar said: If the gracious gentleman can be helped by keeping the frogs silent, then he should be helped. If he could work such a miracle, he was promised a whole sackful of grain, as heavy as he could carry it himself. Now the beggar went out of the castle, went around it in a wide radius, as far as only a frog's voice could ring out and be heard, and used his secret art. And behold, the loud roaring of the frogs stopped and no one opened his mouth again, and the nobleman got sleep and recovered; and the poor man got his sack full of rye and said as he parted: It will do well for a hundred years, no longer - then let others see what they can do.

The frogs are still silent at Schwante, which is very annoying to them, the hundred years are not over yet, but soon. From time to time one or the other begins to try whether there is still a voice, but quickly realizes that it is not yet time and remains silent. But when the hundred years are up, good heavens, what fun and what a feast there will be among the frogs! Schwante, then rejoice!
